Volcano House
is currently comprised of the Main Building, the Deluxe Wing,
the Ohia Wing, a
minute’s
walk from the main lobby, and the Namakani Paio
Cabins,
3 miles from
the main building. The main building of the present
Volcano House was built in
1941, with the addition of the Deluxe Wing built
in 1962. There are 6 Crater View Deluxe, 14 crater-view rooms, 12 non-
crater view rooms, 8 garden view
rooms,
2 standard Ohia rooms and
10
cabins available for visitors. From 1977 to
1986, Volcano House was
managed by the Sheraton Chain.
Ken
Direction Corporation, a local company owned by the
Ken Fujiyama
family, purchased the Volcano House
in 1983. The Ken Fujiyama family
took over management from Sheraton Chain in 1986. In
1989 Ken Direction
Corporation signed a new contract with National Park
Service and started
renovations over the following years without closing
the hotel and restaurants.
As the park concessioner, Ken Direction Corporation
provides food, lodging,
camper cabins, gifts, drinks and other services for park
visitors. Today
Volcano House operates the award-winning Ka O’helo restaurant,
historical
Uncle George’s Lounge, a snack bar and two gift shops. All of its 42
rooms
are refurbished and furnished with rare Koa wood furniture for a touch of
simple island elegance. In 1998 the kitchen was completely renovated and
modern
kitchen equipment installed. A new windows-based hotel
management system is
applied to facilitate various hotel services and enhance
management
capabilities.
Volcano House maintains the longstanding tradition of offering visitors
hospitality, warm family-like atmosphere, and the extraordinary experience
of
dining with a view overlooking the steaming crater of an active volcano.
The
fire in the lobby is burning bright as it has for over 125 years. There is a
comfortable chair, refreshing drink and a world of wonder waiting for you at
Volcano House. Come and be a part of history!
